Thermochemistry: determining the heat of reaction

Objectives
1. To determine the value of heat capacity of a calorimeter.
2.  To determine the heat of neutralization of HCl and NaOH.

Introduction
The Study of energy changes which take place during a chemical reaction is called thermochemistry or chemical energetic. Every chemical changes are accompanied by the evolution or absorption of heat, although in many cases this is not obvious as the amount is so small that no noticeable change in temperature occurs.
The heat can be measure by using calorimeter.
1.     The rises in temperature when a substance is heated depend on the heat capacity of the substance.
2.    The molar heat capacity of a substance is the energy required to raise the temperature of one mole of the substance by one kelvin.
3.    The specific heat capacity of a substance is the energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of the substance by one kelvin. For example, the specific heat capacity for water is 4.18 J g-1 K-1. This means that to raise 1g of water from T K to (T + 1) K requires 4.18 J of heat energy.
4.    The enthalpy change of reaction involving solutions can be calculated by the following equation
H = mc  T
Where   H = heat absorbed or liberated
C = Specific heat capacity
M = mass of solution
T = the increase or decrease in temperature

Charles’ Law

Objectives
To observe the effect of temperature on gas volume

Introduction
Charles's law states that at constant temperature, the volume of a fixed mass of gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature. The mathematical expression of Charles’ law is as follows
 v inversely proportional to t( T = 273 + t ºc)
Or

Charles’ law can be represented graphically by plotting the volume of a given gas against temperature. On extrapolation, the graph cuts the temperature at -273 ºC. This temperature is called absolute zero and was adopted as the zero on the kelvin scale or the absolute temperature scale.

Equipment
·        # Watch
·         #Erlenmeyer Flask with stopper
·         #500 ml tube
·         #Rubber stopper and clip
·         #Tripod stand
·         #Thermometer
·         #Bunsen burner

Reagent
-Nil-

Procedure
1.    1. The erlermeyer flask was weighed with the rubber stopper and its clip.
2.    2. Erlenmeyer flask was placed in the beaker with water.
3.    3. The water was boiled at least for 10 minutes without stopper so that the air inside the flask will have same temperature with the water boiling point.
4.    4. Sink was filled with water.
5.    5. Finished heating the flask, the end of the rubber tube was clip and marked.
6.    6. The flask removed from the boiling water and then the end of the tube was soaked together with the clip. Flask was leave in open air.
7.    7. The flask was unclipped to allow the water to get in. The air inside the flask reach the water temperature. Then flask was soaked again in the sink.
8.    8. The tube was clipped again at respective mark and removed from the sink.
9.    The reading at the air pressure meter was noted down.

Result
a)    Flask mass + assembles = 124.44 g
b)    Flask mass + assembles + inhaled water = 125.74 g
c)    Flask mass + assembles + water(full flask) = 248.2 g

Data elaboration
a)    Full flask water mass = 248.2 g
b)    Inhaled water mass = 1.3 g
c)    Inhaled water volume = 1.3 g
d)    Air volume at 100°C
= full flask water volume
= (a) / water density
= 248.2 g
e)    Air volume at room temperature :
= flask air volume at 100°C – inhaled water volume
= (d) – (c)
= 246.9 g

Question
1.    At What temperature, the calibration line cut the temperature axis. Compare with the theoretical value.

In theory, the temperature cut the axis at -273°C and this is called absolute zero.

2.    By using the Charles’ law and gas volume at 100ºC from your experiment, calculate the theoretical volume at the water in the sink temperature

Charles’ law

248 g                    =          V2
(100 + 273) k              (29+273)K

Therefore, V2 = 200.7 g

DETERMINATION OF THE FORMULA UNIT OF A COMPOUND

Determination of the formula unit of a compound

Objectives
1. To synthesis a zinc chloride compound.
2. To determine the formula unit of zinc chloride.

Introduction
Chemical compound is a pure chemical substance consisting of two or more different chemical elements which can be separated into simpler substances by chemical reaction chemical compound has a unique chemical structure and defined. They consist of the fixed ratio of atoms are held together in a room setting is defined by chemical bonds. Chemical compound molecule compounds that can be held together by covalent bonds, salt is held together by ionic bonds, intermetallic compounds are held together by metal ties, or a complex held together by a coordinate covalent bond. Another main property of a compound is its chemical composition, which identified only by determining the elements present in the compound. The calculation of the chemical composition of straight ahead. The molecular weight of the empirical formula weight divided by the number of atoms of each element to produce a percentage of each element. This is done for each element in the empirical formula and tabulated as chemical composition. Please note the order is based on electro-negative elements.

Emperical Formula               2                                         3

Question

1. Explain why the content is not weighed while it is still hot?
It is always poor laboratory procedure to weigh something when it is still hot because the hot object will radiate heat in the form of convection currents in the air above the scale. This will alter the air pressure above the object unpredictably and produce unstable readings of the object being massed.

2. Compare the calculated formula unit with the theoretical formula unit. Explain why there is a difference and suggest ways to overcome the error.
The theorecal formula unit will be 1 Zn and 2 Cl so the theoretical formula unit is ZnCl2. But the calculated formula unit is 2 Zn and 3 Cl so the formula unit will be Zn2Cl3. There is a difference because the experiment was done in an open place where there is air presence and we weigh balance also not in a close condition, so there is some error. To overcome this error, the weigh balance should have its cover to prevent the air weighed too.

3. Based on your result, write the equation for the reaction between zinc and HCl.

Zn(s) + 2HCl(l)  H2(g) + ZnCl2

Discussion
This experiment shows on how reagents can be used to produce colored solutions or precipitates when certain ions are present.  Using such techniques to determine what components are present in a sample is called qualitative analysis. The cations to be studied include some common alkali metals (Na+ and K+) and some alkaline earth metals (Mg2+, Ca2+, and Ba2+), along with Zn2+, Al3+, and NH4+.  These ions are not colored in solution, and most of their compounds are white.  It is impossible therefore to use colors of solutions or precipitates to indicate which of these cations is present in solution.  So, in this experiment, will use differences in solubilities to separate the cations from each other.  Na+, K+, and NH4+ ions form very few insoluble compounds. All the sulfates of the cations listed above are all soluble, with the exception of barium sulfate.  Calcium sulfate is slightly soluble and will not precipitate under the conditions of this experiment.  Thus adding sulfate to a mixture of these cations will allow to detect barium and remove it from solution. Four of the other cations form insoluble hydroxides. (Calcium hydroxide is slightly soluble, but will precipitate in a strongly basic solution.)  Two of these, however, are amphoteric and will dissolve in a strongly basic solution to form complex ion. By making the solution strongly basic, then, two of the remaining cations will precipitate, while two more will be converted to complex ions.  The two which precipitate can be separated due to differences in the solubilities of their oxalates.  One of them will precipitate when ammonium oxalate is added. The solution containing the complex ions will then be acidified, then neutralized with NH3(aq).  In this weakly basic solution one of the amphoteric hydroxides will precipitate, while the other forms a complex ion with NH3(aq).  Finally, this last cation is precipitated with sulfide ion.

Rindu dengan mereka berdua, insan teristimewa

Hari ini bday adik saya, tapi dia jau di sabah saaaaaaaaaaana, saya di shah alam. Tadi saya kol la diorang, and saya sangat-sangat jelesh, diorang dua ( ma mum n ma adeq) sedang excited mau buat persiapan untuk esok. diorang buat makan-makan. Panggang-panggang ayam. And so on. Huhu. Rindu dengan mereka berdua. oh, julai, come faster. Saya sudah x sabar balek sabah.

Oh My Mum
...

Bila kol dia, kadang-kadang tu mesti dia dengan mai adeq gaduh. tapi apapun, i mish that moments.

Oh my adeq
...

Dulu-dulu, bila saya di sabah, saya suka marah adeq saya, sebab saya suka marah-marah. eksen la, kan big sister. tapi kami dua b'ngam jugak. kami buat benda yang sot-sot bersama. and kami selalu buli mum saya. sampai sekarang dia xmau mengakui yang saya sudah 19. dia kata "adui moi, muka mu ni 19 tahun" .. hihi .. sebab 19teen selalu tengok orang da besar. =). Dia x pernah sebut nama saya betul walaupun dalam keadaan bergurau, dia akan panggil amoi jugak, even to her friends. Sweet little sister.
Dulu-dulu, saya suka suruh dia buat ini la, itu la, besa la, big sister ka. tunjuk kuasa sikit. sekarang nie, rindu mau suruh-suruh dia bila saya malas. tapi x dapat. I appreciate her.. =) .. Sayang mai adeq. Sekarang ni mai adeq da 17 tahun, besa da dia. Spm 2, tapi kadang saya rasa dia bukan form 5. sungguh cepat masa berlalu. Oh mai adeq.

I'll owez love you my mum n my adeq.

Aku+Dia=Cuma Kawan

4. Dia tau bila kita bad mood and dia akan jaga hati kita
5. Walaupun kita marah dia, dia takkan simpan dalam hati
6. dan banyak lagi

Sebab faktor di atas 2 la kita rasa selesa ngan dia and kadang2 akan bandingkan dia ngan bf kita.
Aku cakap dari pengalaman la. Pernah lah hampir2. Tapi fikir jugak, kan kapel jadi kawan nanti macam lain. Nanti kalau gadu, akan terasa sangat sebab x da tempat mau luahkan.. =). hehe.

Untuk entry ni, ada 1 lagu yang betul2 sesuai
Auburn- Bestfriend

The thought of this is killing me, it's been on my mind .
Can't believe it's been right here after all this time .
And even though I love you I can't seem to find someone who cares the way you do
You know, I love the way we're always been nothing more than friends .
So why do I give every man the stand up .
Thought I was over this but once again I'm comparing you to him .
And I find that there's no you in him at matters

Boy even though your my bestfriend
I can't help it whenever I compare you to him
It's like I always do this
With every single man
And I hate that I can't find someone who's worth my time
Just like my bestfriend .

And I know you hear me say this all the time
I don't do relationships cause I'm on my grind.
But see your part of this
Because I just can't find someone who knows me like you do
Always brought out the good in me
Don't know just what you see,
Whatever it is, no other guy has even tried .
Remember when you left one day and turned around to say "your my bestfriend"
And right there you made me cry .

Even though your my bestfriend
I can't help it whenever I compare you to him
It's like I always do this
With every single man
And I hate that I can't find someone whos worth my time
Just like my bestfriend .

I'm trying to let you know
A part of me just can't let this go
Never had a friend, one who understands
with you it felt so free
I don't know whatchu did .
But I know whatever it is
I'm so thankful for you
I'm so grateful for you

Even though the things I told you .

Karak

Semalam aku, yaya and reen pegi nonton karak. Seram citer.
